Timber Rattlers ready to return to action, start of 2021 season

(WFRV) – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are set to return to the field after missing all of last season.

It’s not exactly the same but the feel, and yes even the smell, of baseball is back.

“The first game in spring training, when the baseball stadium opened, the fans were in the stands. You could smell the baseball stadium, the concession stands. I think it’s my most vivid sensory memory of opening spring training day, ”said Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson.

Returning from spring training in Arizona, it’s the minor league’s turn for opening day. Like any year, there will be new names ready to step onto the pitch as the season begins. In 2021, that includes the Brewers’ top prospect and first-round pick Garrett Mitchell.

“A lot of our top round picks may have a certain tool that jumps and is more elite. Garrett is a guy who goes with a lot of things, ”Erickson said.

“I’m talking about a guy who can come and play 100% all the time. You never know what the most important pitch is. I hope in those times I can come and do something for us as a team, ”said Garrett Mitchell.

The UCLA rookie turned a lot of heads with the Big League club during spring training. He is now ready to build on that success in the minor leagues with the Timber Rattlers.

“When you don’t play that long, like a year or so without really playing, being able to go out there and do what I did was really great. I try not to focus too much on this in particular. Just because it was just a small portion compared to the next 120 games, ”said Mitchell.

There are plenty of familiar faces on the roster as the Timber Rattlers prepare for Opening Day as well. With the team moving to High-A, instead of Low-A, there are players who missed out on last season but still progressed through the Brewers’ minor league system at the same time.

In all, 13 players from the 2019 Timber Rattlers will return to Grand Chute to start this season.

“When I had my task force this year, it was really nice to recognize faces. They know my expectations. Being able to take advantage of that right away is nice, ”Erickson said.

The Timber Rattlers open the 2021 season against Beloit on Tuesday night at Fox Cities Stadium. The first pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. with limited fan participation.
