Every little kid who plays football in the front yard dreams of one day playing in the NFL. As these kids get older, this dream either fades, along with their athletic prowess, or intensifies as they improve and play at progressive levels. Once these kids step into high-profile college football, that dream reaches new heights, and for the lucky few, that dream comes true.
Four Texas Tech student-athletes have taken their dreams of playing in the NFL a step further by joining League teams. Two Red Raiders heard their names called during the draft, while two more got the call as undrafted free agents.
Zech McPhearson and Jack Anderson were called up on the final day of the NFL Draft Saturday with McPhearson at the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round and Anderson three rounds later at the Buffalo Bills.
McPhearson was the Red Raider’s first defensive back to be drafted in the first four rounds since Darcel McBath was selected by the Denver Broncos in the second round in 2009.
“The board fell – the way we fell was exceptional, and exciting how it was born. We love it, its versatility, its ability to play outdoors, its ability to play indoors, its skills ball, his football intelligence. ” The Eagles vice president of personnel said. “He’s a team captain. He’s a guy that we have (Southwest Zone Scout) Shawn Heinlen, did a great job of extracting the information on Zech and really brought him to the surface with us. “
Anderson was the Buffalo Bills’ final pick in their seventh-round draft draft. Anderson joins his colleague Red Raider Davis Webb in Buffalo. Webb is currently an alternate quarterback and a vital member of the organization.
The Texas Tech offensive lineman has had some recent success in the NFL with undrafted free agent Terence Steele starting several games for the Dallas Cowboys last season and LaAdrian Waddle and Luis Vasquez locking multiple Super Bowl rings during of the last decade.
The Bills chose Anderson because of his versatility along the offensive line with the ability to play both guard and center.
In addition to being selected by Anderson and McPhearson, defensive lineman Eli Howard signed a free agent deal with the Atlanta Falcons, while wide receiver TJ Vasher agreed to join the Dallas Cowboys.
